Detailed Description of MV Kaselehlia
Fuel Consumption
The average fuel consumption is 4.3 litres per hour. This value is the average over the entire life of the new engine at 744 engine hours from February 1997 to July 2006. Exact fuel consumption depends upon how fast the boat is cruising and records show the lowest rate over this whole period was 2.7 litres/hour and the highest 5.5 litres/hour.

Diesel Engine and Gearbox
Iveco Fiat 120 HP. Model #8041-M09. Top RPM=3000. Cruising RPM=2000. Engine hours = 744 since new. Fully maintained by professional diesel engineer. The Borgwarner hydraulic gearbox has a ratio 2.1 to :1

Main Drive Shaft
Stainless Steel 2.5 inch diameter. Installed new in 1997 with universal joint at the gearbox and mid-shaft bearing. A new stern tube was fitted with the new shaft.

Fire Exinguishers
The main wheelhouse holds a large powder exitinguisher and a large CO2 extingisher mounted on the walls. In the toilet, there are two CO2 extingishers mounted on the wall. On the starboard side in the wheelhouse at the forward end is a small locker, and inside this there are 2 extinguishers desgned for eletrical fires.

Wheelhouse Lockers and Squabs
There are good sized lockers on each side of the wheelhouse with both lift-up lids and removable side panels. These are used for storing food and other supplies, and perhaps a few tools. There is a liquor cabinet just inside the door on the starboard side and two small lockers underneath. The two side lockers are fitted with high density foam squabs covered with royal blue removal covers. Two of these squabs (one on each side) is identical in size and designed to be uplifted and placed together to form a double bed on the floor in the space behind the engine cover. That is the reason why each side has an additional smaller squab of unequal sizes. This arrangement allows two more people to live on board, although a party of six is crowded !

Safety Flares
On the starboard side in the wheelhouse at the forward end is a small locker, and inside this there are several safety items. There are 4 rocket flares inside an unsinkable yellow plastic container; 3 loose hand flares; 2 smoke flares in unsinkable container; one loose smoke flare.

SSB and VHF Radio Equipment
Kodan Model #8121 Single Sideband. Fitted with the following frequency crystals: 2182, 2045, 2207, 2480, 2638, 4125, 4417, 4146, 6215, 6224. VHF unit is Standard brand. There is also an old AM radio and tape for music.
The SSB and VHF were checked by the Radio Inspector annually during the time the vessel was under Safe Ship Management control (until we retired 3 years ago).

First Aid kit
On the starboard side in the wheelhouse at the forward end is a small locker, and inside this there is a first aid kit.

Fuel and Water
The stainless steel diesel tank is located port side under the rear deck and holds 300 litres. The two water tanks are copper and hold 300 litres and located on the starboard side under the rear deck. The two fillers set into the rear deck are clearly labelled `diesel' and 'water'.

Deckwash facility and emergency fire-hose
A high delivery DC deckwash pump is located immediately foreward of the fresh water tanks. Access to the stop cock and skin-fitting is through the small doors underneath the step-ladder by the main door into the wheelhouse. After turning on the stop cock, the pump is activated by a switch on the main electrical panel. A high density hose is clipped onto the water delivery point on the back of the wheelhouse.

Stern Gland and main shaft greasers
A manually operated greaser is attached to the stern gland. Access is through the small doors underneath the step-ladder by the main door into the wheelhouse. A second greaser for the mid-shaft bearing is under the floor boards behind the motor.

Boarding platform
A heavy duty boarding platform is attached to the transom, strong enough for two fully equipped scuba diver. It measures 1760 x 425 mm and is 90 mm above the water. A fold-down SS ladder permits easy access to and from the water. A second SS ladder permits access from the boarding platform to the aft deck.

Two Depth Sounders
There are two depth sounders on board. The main unit is situated on the starboard side up front in the wheelhouse. It is a Furuno 8 inch colour sounder Model FCV582, dual frequency (50, 200 KHz), water temperature, paddle wheel knot meter, and equipped for navigation input. Latitude/Longitude appears on screen from the GPS unit. The secondary depth sounder is a Humminbird LCR400 with the fold-down display mounted on the roof just inside the main door to the wheelhouse. This provides useful information while fishing from the aft deck.

Two GPS Units
There are two Motorola GPS units on board with separate antennae. One is wired into the depth sounder to give Latitude/Longitude readings on screen.
The second unit is a special differential GPS, designed to operate with a laptop computer, and receive correction data from a land-based GPS transmitter stationed on a known datum. This device was used for benthic survey research in the Marlborough Sounds, requiring highly accurate location data corrected in real time for tidal movements. If this unit is operated without the GPS transmitter, it reverts to normal GPS mode, and with suitable software can show tracking on a map of the Marlborough Sounds, together with marker buoy lights etc. I can supply software for this if required, in addition to the transmitter. If this second GPS unit is not required, I will remove it from the vessel.

Barometer and Clock
Matching 15 cm diameter brass barometer and clock are situated next to the depth sounder.

Compasses
A compass is fixed next to the instrument panel. This was regularly calibrated during the time the vessel was under Safe Ship Management control (until we retired 3 years ago). There is also a hand-held portable compass for emergency operation clipped onto the wall near the instrument panel.

EPIRB
An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is located on the wall immediaterly inside the main door into the wheelhouse.

Propellor and Hull Speed
As with many vessels, when we purchased Kaselehlia the propellor was not working efficiently, and hull speed was lower than we thought the boat should cruise at. The propellor was 21 x 18. Sea trials using the measured nautical mile in Wellington Harbour showed that the propellor was averaging only about 50% efficiency across the RPM range, and the maxium RPM was only 2300 with a brand new motor. This graph shows the effect of re-sizing the propellor in two stages until a maximum of 2800 RPM could be reached. Efficiency rose from 75-80%, and top hull speed was 10.5 knots (calibrated). At a cruising speed of 2000 RPM, the hull moves along at an acceptable 8 knots. return to top
Bilge Pumps
The main bilge pump is in front of the motor. Should this fail, there is an auxilliary bilge pump at the rear of the motor. These are both connected to a bilge counter so that should any leaks develop they will be quickly noticed. Each bilge pump may be operated from the instruement panel if desired. Because this is a bilge vessel it is normal for some water to be in the bilges, and there should always be a very slow drip at the stern gland. When stationary, the bilge pump will operate up to twice per day, falling to once per week when left alone on a mooring for any length of time. The bilge pump runs for about 15 seconds. During sea work when the boat may be rolling about the bilge pump switch trips more often and pumps for 2 or 3 seconds. Batteries and Solar Panel
A large square solar panel is mounted on the SS podium above the roof. This produces a trickle charge for the batteries, to minimise any possibility of a battery being flattened while left on a mooring. The regulator for this is located inside the battery locker, which is on the port side at the forward end of the wheelhouse. There are two batteries: high capacity for the starter notor, and smaller battery for all domestic uses (lights etc.). The battery switch below the instrument panel is labelled 1 for domestic and 2 for starter. We always put the battery switch on `Both' when starting the motor.return to top
Gas stone and gas supply
There is a small gas stove in the wheelhouse, and the galvanised gas bottle is in a SS cradle on the podium above the roof. Delivery to the stove is via SS pipes, and has two safety SS stop cocks return to top
Plan, Profile, Measurements and Materials
The main measurements of Kaselehlia are shown in a Plan and a
Profile of the boat. The length overall from bow to trailing edge of the boarding platform is 38 ft (11.58 m). Maximum beam is 8ft 10 in (2.70 m). Height above the water to to the top of the bow railing is 6ft 8 in (2.03 m). The maximum draft is 3ft 8 in (1.13 m). Total unladen weight is 6.5 tonne. The hull is semi-displacement. The hull planking is one and a quarter inch kauri, as is the main cabin. The interior wood when we bought the vessel was of a variety of materials, and were replaced with one and a quarter inch kauri flooring. The wide belting around the sides is macrocarpa. The aft deck and sides and transom are marine ply. The topsides are fibreglassed, except the plywood around the aft decking area. return to top
Freezer and Compressor
On the port side towards the rear of the wheelhouse is an insulated chest freezer of 103 litre capacity (internal dimensions 41 x 44 cm plan, 57 cm deep). This is supported by a compressor with magnetic clutch, attached to the port side of the engine and run by twin belts from the engine. It is operated from the instrument panel with a pull witch. When pulled on the magnetic clutch closes and starts the compressor. This shows a blue light on the instrument panel. A second blue light shows until the thermostat reaches operational temperature which is -10 degrees C, and then this switches off, together with the magnetic clutch.return to top
Sink Bench and Kitchen Cupboard
Immediately inside the main door of the wheelhouse on the port side is a SS sink and kitchenware cupboard. The main exhaust pipe from the engine runs underneath the sink inside the cupboard and care must be taken not to put any plastic items near this or they will melt. Water is supplied to the sink with an electric water pump.

There is a ship's bell located on the port side above the freezer.

Anchors, Anchor Winch and Fairleads
There are two fairleads at the bow. The one facing direct ahead carries a Bruce anchor, with chain and rope to chain locker below decks in the toilet area. A second fairlead runs at an angle to the port side and is for mooring ropes. An anchor winch is located behind the main fairlead. A pick anchor is stowed in the aft hold. A Samson block is located behind the anchor winch.

Deck Cleats
The deck is provisioned with large cleats: two on the fore-deck; two amidships; two on the aft corners, and two on the transom.

Aft Hold with Scallop Dredge (Not part of sale) and Emergency Diesel
There is a hatch on the aft deck with a good sized hold underneath, suitable for storing fishing gear, nets, etc. At present it holds a scallop dredge (which will be removed before sale) and a 20 litre emergency can of diesel.

Rudder and Hydraulic Steering
The rudder is SS and was installed new in 1997. It is supported by hydraulic ram to the wheel.

Three Tonne Swing Mooring at Ngakuta Bay ($5,000 optional extra)
Kaselehlia is normally kept on a swing mooring at Ngakuta Bay. This is an exceptional mooring, being situated out of all significant weather in the lee of the peninsula. It has a permanent floating rope stern line. The three tonne block was professionally laid, and has a service contract with Professional Divers Ltd. Should the purchaser wish to use this mooring, it is available as an optional extra.

Ten man Life Raft and Lide Buoy
A ten man life raft is located on the roof of the wheelhouse, and is lashed to the side rails. A life buoy is located on the aft deck port side.

Weatherpoof hatch above Bunkroom
In the ceiling of the bunkroom there is a hatch with a large sheet of thick perspex to admit light into the bunkroom. This can be opened up and folded back for ventilation on hot nights.

SS Podium with Tuna Trolling Poles
On the top of the wheelhouse next to the hatch there is a very strong SS Podium which takes the radio antenna, GPS antennae, and has a small platform for installing radar (not installed). It also has two side-arms to take the tuna poles when they are not in use. These can be lowered down for trawling when fishing from the aft deck. They must be secured by ropes to the rails on the fore-deck before use to prevent any damage to the mounts on the wheelhouse roof.

BrassPortholes
In the toilet area there are two brass portholes, which can be hinged open. These are original and appear to be made of naval brass. Four more fixed portholes were installed in 1997 made of silicon bronze: two in the bunk room, and two in the wheelhouse.

Driver's hatch above the Wheel
There is a sliding hatch abive the wheel for the person at the wheel to gain access to the wheelhouse roof.

Marine Toilet and Wash-Basin
The original marine toilet was replaced with a new one in 1997. A wash basin is located in the toilet area with fresh water hand pump. There is a storage cupboard in the toilet area.

The boat has three large red globular shaped fenders, and four blue longitudinal fenders.
These will be removed before sale.

Nylon Ropes (Not part of sale
There are two 50 metre nylon ropes on board, and two 15 metre nylon ropes. These will be removed before sale.

Bunkroom
The bunkroom has four bunks. The two upper bunks have palias mattersses, and the two lower bunks have foam rubber mattresses. There are lockers underneath the lower bunks, which are used for storing life-jackets.
