Historical Rainfall Records

We are very fortunate that there is some existing historical data on rainfall for Ngakuta Bay. This was collected by a long-time resident, Tom Kennedy begining in 1986 and ending half way through 2005. The mean annual rainfall here is quite high, 1383 mm per year (54.4 inches). This can be compared to Blemheim 655 mmg (25.8 inches), and Nelson 970 mm (38.2 inches). Tom's data shows that although rainfall is highest in July and August, the monthly variation is only about 19% through the year.

The pattern of rainfall for the four seasons, as might be expected, shows winter and spring receive the greatest rain. The data on number of rain days in each month must be viewed with caution, as this reflects more on how many times the rain gauge was actually measured and emptied. However, the mean monthly pattern is a fair reflection of the real situation.
