The woodland park in the centre of Martinborough township (Photo BFL)
Long before Europeans arrived in the Wairarapa Maori villages were present in various places throughout the Ruamahanga river valley, and many more along the east coast and Palliser Bay. One such village was known as Waihinga and was close to the present-day township of Martinborough. There are two spellings of this Maori name, but there is good reason to accept that Waihinga is correct reather than Waihenga. For further information on this matter, click here.
